The First Look

Often couples ask us if we would recommend having their reveal to one another before the wedding, or the “First Look.”  No, it’s not traditional, but here are some reasons you may want to consider the First Look:

From the perspective of a bride:

  • Take a Deep Breath  The First Look was one of the sweetest moments of Tyler and my wedding day, because it gave us a chance to take a deep breath and enjoy each other’s company.  I am a very emotional person, so seeing my husband before the wedding really helped me from crying buckets walking down the aisle.
  • Spend A Moment Alone  The First Look was a great opportunity for us to spend some time alone.  The wedding day goes by fast, so we savored this moment being together!
  • Relieve Nerves  In my own experience, the First Look also helped ease my nerves, so by the time I actually did walk down the aisle, I felt calm.  Also, I was able to make eye contact with our guests who traveled from all over as  I walked down the aisle, while also looking at my handsome groom.
  • Join the Party!  By the time the ceremony was over, we knew we only needed to take a few more pictures before joining our guests for the rest of the celebration!  Because we took all of our bridal party shots before, they were free to enjoy the festivities after the ceremony and did not have to wait around until we finished family photos.

From the perspective of a photographer:

  • Candid Creativity  Generally, the First Look allows for us to capture couples’ expressions from all different perspectives, giving the couple more variety in these precious shots. The First Look is a great opportunity for us to capture genuine candids of the couple, which are often their most cherished photographs.  There is really only a small window of time and space for us to capture the first look down the aisle during the ceremony before the officiant starts the ceremony.
  • Time Saver  In regards to your wedding day timeline,  if you choose the First Look, we can plan to finish a majority of your photos before the ceremony.  This is a major pro if your ceremony is close to sunset because in the event that your day is falling behind schedule, we won’t be scrambling for daylight.  We want to be as efficient with your time as possible, while also giving you the best pictures possible.  The First Look helps us out with both of those.  All your loved  ones who are eager to congratulate you (and potentially eager to eat) will thank you.

If your wedding is outdoors, we would definitely recommend a First Look if your ceremony ends less than 1.5 hours before the sun sets.  This is often the case during the winter months of November through February.  Whether you choose the First Look or to see each other for the first time down the aisle, we would love to work closely with you while you plan your wedding timeline to ensure we can get them the best images possible!
